Sickness and Medication Policy

We follow strict guidelines when dealing with medication of any kind in the nursery and these are set out below.

If your child is feeling unwell, it should be ideal to keep them at home.

Please call us if you must bring your child to the nursery.

•  Medication prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist (Medicines containing aspirin will only be given if prescribed by a doctor)

• Prescription medicine will only be given to the person named on the bottle for the dosage stated

• Medicines must be in their original containers

• Non-prescription medication (these will not usually be administrated)

• The nursery will not administer any non-prescription medication containing aspirin.

• On registration, parents will be asked to fill out a medication form to consent to their child being given a specific type of liquid paracetamol or anti-histamine in particular circumstances such as an increase in the child’s temperature or a wasp or bee sting.

• If a child has a raised temperature, once a member of staff has made contact with the parent and they have given their permission and agreed to collect the child as soon as possible, fever relief (e.g Calpol) or anti-histamines (e.g. Piriton) can be administered.

• Please notify the nursery if any medication has been given at home in case your child has an adverse reaction or becomes ill during their time at nursery.

• Children must stay at home for the first 48 hours of taking a newly prescribed medicine.

• Children cannot be accepted into the nursery with diarrhoea, vomiting or a high temperature. See our E-Coli policy available in the nursery.

• If a child appears unwell upon arrival, the parent/carer will be asked to wait until they have spoken to the manager.

• If your child suffers from an allergy, please inform us so we can formulate a care plan to support your child. We will need all relevant information from your family doctor for this.

• In all cases, medication form must be signed by the parent and all medicines given to a child are recorded, with the time shown, and witnessed.
